Human nature is an incredible thing. We have turned from stone tools to amazing computers that fit into our pockets. The only problem is that we are also very good at destroying the planet we call home. But things are getting worse and we must act at some point.
Most of us don't really know how big the e-waste problem is. After years of living in a drawer, what will happen to old phones that we have hoarded and thrown away? The first thing that comes to mind is to pour it in the trash, but this mentality has a serious impact on our environment.
For beginners, smart phones and other electronic products have materials that you don't want to put in the trash. These include PBC, lead, mercury, nickel, arsenic, and others. For international reasons, a UNU report said that the world produced only 41.8 million metric tons of e-waste... only in 2014. This is a big waste.
Want to see it more thoroughly? This is enough to fill 1.15 million 18-wheel trucks. The United States seems to be the main contributor, defeating China by more than one million tons. Worse yet, our recovery rate seems to be rather low (13.6 in the United States in 2008). This is something we need to change, especially considering the continued growth of the mobile industry.
The best solution is recycling, so we think we will provide a good list of options when you need to get rid of those old phones. Do not throw them into the trash!
Is the phone still available? The best way to recycle it is to sell it or give it to someone who may need it. Remember that someone’s rubbish can be a treasure for others. Check with family and friends to see if this old phone can be something they need.
This is really the best way to recycle something; just keep it alive and stop someone from buying another phone that goes directly to the landfill.
Don't like the idea of providing valuable equipment? There are always ways to reuse old smartphones. I heard that someone has turned them into Internet-connected security cameras, music players, temporary travel phones, gaming devices, remote controls, and so on. If this happens to be a smart phone, your possibilities are endless. If it's old enough, maybe that cool hipster friend would love to use it!
