A few tips that you need to consider before recycling your old mobile phone.

Earth Day is an annual reminder to be more environmentally friendly and to reduce the negative impact on the world. We are proud to say that 100% of the material in each Lumia mobile device can be recycled and used to create new products or generate energy.

According to a recent Microsoft study, only 9% of people recycle old phones. Most of them end up in the trash drawer.

Are you ready to give up your old friend? Earth Day is the perfect moment.

The first step is to say goodbye. If your friend or family cannot use the retired Lumia, back it up and recycle it.

To back up Windows Phone 8 or 8.1, use the Backup feature in Settings to put your data in the cloud. You can also use OneDrive to sync files with your computer.

If everything fails, you can put everything on the memory card at any time. If you have an old Lumia or Nokia phone, check here for instructions on how to back up your data.

After the backup is complete, reset the phone to erase its contents. In Windows 8 and 8.1, the reset function is located in the settings below.

Next, remove the old SIM card and collect any unwanted chargers, accessories and batteries.

Once you have put everything together, you can find the nearest collection point. Most carrier retail stores will recycle your old phone for you, and many well-known retailers will do the same.
