Rosie Grace: Galaxy S8 Oreo Launches Proven Biggest Problem with Android

The owners of Samsung GALAXY S8 still patiently wait for a free upgrade to Android 8.0 Oreo, as Google has launched its first preview version of its follow-on product Android 9.0P.

Android is an extraordinary operating system.

Open source software provides users with an unprecedented level of customization, system-level support for third-party applications, and close contact with Google Assistant - now the most competitive smart assistant on the market.

However, when it comes to updates, Android is a real mess.

Currently, the latest version of Android runs only in 1.1% of all Android hardware worldwide. In 2016, Android Nougat was 28.5%. In 2015, Android Marshmallow was 28.1%.

Every year, Google executives will enter the stage during the company's annual developer conference to unveil the latest scene in Android.

The latest and innovative team will proudly discuss the new features of mobile operating systems, design adjustments and security improvements.

The new version of Android will inevitably be named after a popular dessert or snack and will launch Google Pixel and Nexus brands this summer.

Then third-party device manufacturers like Samsung, HTC, OnePlus and LG will bring their new operating system to their latest smartphones - adding their own features, adjustments and user interface design.

For Samsung Galaxy S8, this is more obvious than the launch of Android 8.0.

In August 2017, when the Android Oreo was released worldwide, the Galaxy S8 was Samsung's flagship smartphone.

However, those who paid £689 for the latest and greatest Galaxy S8 had to wait several months before upgrading to Android 8.0.

Samsung closed the Android Oreo beta program in late January 2018 - it was five months after Oreo was released.

However, Korean technology companies have not yet launched a final update in the UK.

Six months after Google launched Android 8.0 Oreo software updates for all Pixel and Nexus-branded devices, Galaxy S8 users have yet to see new features.

In the UK, Samsung Galaxy S8 owners are unlikely to see updates until April.

When it comes to Express.co.uk, industry sources revealed that the network is only beginning to conduct internal testing of the software.

These network tests may take up to four weeks to complete and the update will be pushed until mid-April, Express.co.uk has been informed.

This means that Galaxy S8 owners can get Android Oreo updates within the last month after the developer preview is launched.

This is not ideal for customers who purchase flagship phones for one of the world's largest smartphone manufacturers.

However, although other smartphone makers may be able to reverse the latest Android updates slightly faster in their hardware, it still takes a very long time.

Google tried to solve the problem in Android 8.0 Oreo through a feature called Project Treble.

This separates the work done by the hardware partners from the Android updates released by Google to ensure that Android can use the latest chipsets.

Treble allows OEMs such as Samsung and Motorola to release updates to the Android operating system without waiting for any chip partners such as Qualcomm to send any software updates.

Unfortunately, Project Treble has not yet been widely adopted.

For example, the Android Oreo update for the Galaxy S8 does not support Project Treble.

OnePlus also confirmed that its current lineup, including OnePlus 3, 3T and OnePlus 5, 5T will not support Project Treble - even if they have been updated to Android Oreo.

This means that these mobile phone users are unlikely to speed up in the future, and as more details about the upcoming software features of Android P begin to appear online, this can be very painful.

But things will get better.

Samsung this week confirmed that its new Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ flagship products support Project Treble out-of-the-box.

Although Galaxy S9 owners are unlikely to see benefits in a short period of time (Android P will be released after the Google IO Developer Conference on May 8th), there may be faster updates in the future.

Google’s Android One initiative is another California technology company’s initiative to address fragmentation in its ecosystem.

Original device manufacturers who register Android One plans cannot publish a serious version of an operating system that contains a large number of software applications.

Instead, Google promised Android One hardware will run "the most pure form of Android."

Lack of customization by OEMs allowed Google to launch regularly updated Android One smartphones just like its own Nexus and Pixel branded hardware.

Therefore, any Android One smartphone will guarantee at least two years of operating system upgrade to the latest version of Android.

Google said that this means that it can get the latest innovations, and the operation of the phone is always as smooth as the purchase date.

The U.S. company also claims that Android One phones are the safest phones because they regularly receive security software updates and come with built-in Google Play Protect.

Nokia recently announced a series of new flagship smartphones, including the dual curved Nokia 8 Sirocco included in the Android One program.
