Rosie Grace: Design : Moto Z2 Force

Because Motorola is committed to using the original Moto Z series of magnetic snap design, the company's ability in its follow-up products is limited. The new Moto Z2 Force has almost the same height, width and curvature as its predecessor. It is only 6.1 mm thin and weighs only 143 grams, without any additional mod.

Another common feature of this phone and the original Moto Z is the thick borders above and below the screen. If these are obvious before, then in the era of borderless screens, they are actually screaming loudly. The lack of an 18:9 team also put the phone at a disadvantage compared to the current game. Previous Moto phones have used the Force suffix to indicate physical resiliency, and in this phone, the company is boasting what it calls the ShatterShield glass, which is already super tough. We didn't try to drop this phone and see if it would be clean, but after a few days of full use, we could see that even the entire front felt dozens of scratches.

There is a large front flash at the top of the screen. The fingerprint sensor wakes up the phone when the phone is in the standby state, but the opposite is true. We had to train ourselves not to use it as a home button, because when we tried to use it, it just closed the phone.

This phone is only black, unlike the original Moto Z. There is no Style Shell mod in the box. These are simple snap-in decorative panels that cover magnetic contact points and camera collisions. The black brushed metal surface of the phone looks good to us, but not everyone is happy with the exposed gold Moto Mods connector and the huge camera crash. When the phone is in your pocket, you can feel the bumps, but on the other hand, the tilt on the table is very convenient. Fortunately, it is not difficult to grab this phone without any additional mods.

The power and volume buttons are in the upper right corner, but they are too rough and are too close to each other. Using them to take photos or screenshots is rather inconvenient. At least the power button has a little texture, so you can distinguish it by touching it, but this shows a surprising lack of attention to detail. There is a hybrid dual SIM card bay on the top and a USB Type-C port on the bottom. The regulatory text is also at the bottom, seeing it print so prominent that we do not like it.

There is no 3.5mm audio jack, but Moto has a 3.5mm plug in the wired headset included in this phone. You will have to use the included USB Type-C adapter, which feels unnecessary blemishes. You also get a relatively compact 15W TurboPower charger, a USB Type-C cable, and two different sizes of rubber earbuds.

Overall, this is a well-built cell phone, but it does not meet the smooth, advanced feel we expect at this price level - and there is no big mod behind it. It claims to have a waterproof nano coating, but lacks the IPxx rating for water and dust protection. If you don't need the features of the Moto Z ecosystem, you may find you happy with OnePlus 5T.
